José Pedro Costigliolo (Uruguay 1902-1985) becomes, together with his wife María Freire, the forerunner of non-figurative aesthetics in Uruguay from his permanent investigation of painting. From his first productions we can perceive his interest in organizing the composition in a growing simplification. His personal studies enthusiastically lead him to the theories of the Dutch constructivists and Dutch Neoplasticists maturing a growing geometric work that distinguishes him until his last creations.

Costigliolo works in painting and also design and graphic arts.

He holds numerous individual exhibitions in Uruguay and abroad, highlighting those of the Museum of Modern Art of San Pablo, 1956; Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro, 1957; Ateneo Barcelonés, Barcelona, 1958; Pan American Union, Washington, 1966. He represents Uruguay in the Biennial of São Paulo, 1951 -53 -55 -57 -61 and in the XXXIII Venice Biennale, 1966.
